Large Ojai Home Installs Shoji

One of our clients, Linda Morris, recently installed custom design shoji doors in a bedroom closet of her Ojai home. West Valley Shoji used red oak stained with a precise color value to match morrisLinda's floors. She specified a "wave" grid design, as well as the number of rows and columns she wanted in her shoji panels.

West Valley Shoji installed the base track with only two screws at the periphery of the install, to minimize any impact on the oak floors. Even though the built-in header was uneven, our install team inserted shims under the track to level the path of the doors across the 9 foot opening.

The final fit on this install met very high tolerances, with a very snug fit and close spacing between the doors, straight and consistent frames, excellent squaring to the opening, and extremely smooth performance.

Laguna Beach and Van Nuys Customers Order Replacement and Repair

Designer Sharon Ginther recently engaged WVS to change shoji paper for an ocean-view Laguna Beach home. While two of the doors were sliding and could be removed, some of the panels were manufactured and locked in place. The panels were fixed in place and there was kumiko damage.

This presented some special challenges for our install team and some very small-gauge replacement kumikos had to be custom-milled in our shop to replace the damaged portions of the screens.

In Van Nuys, Dorene Pon hired WVS to retrofit, repaper, and install some used shoji doors she had purchased online from a private party. For this project, WVS ordered some extra long track to span nearly the entire length of Dorene's living room.

Sleek Euro Closet Designs Accent High-end Pasadena Home

When an art director for motion pictures and television recently engaged West Valley Shoji to redesign three of the closets for her high-end South Pasadena home, she knew exactly what she wanted in terms of design and materials. The resulting look was more European than Asian.

Instead of paper, West Valley Shoji used translucent plexiglas, and the frames and mullions were made of vertical grain Douglas fir. "Because of the large panes and minimal kumikos, plexiglas was the way to go. There was insufficient support for paper in this design," remarked shoji designer John Gravic.

Douglas fir is carefully selected and milled for grain pattern. Other available woods include oak, with it's dense and detailed grain structure; maple, which is a superb, light hardwood for cabinets and shoji frames. Other available woods include alder, walnut, mahogany, birch, and ash.

New Ocean View Locations Go with Asian-Inspired Design

WVS has installed full-wall sliding panels for an exclusive ocean view condo in Montecito, in association with interior firm Kathryne Designs of Studio City. These panels are 8 foot tall and run floor to ceiling on the north and south walls. WVS drilled carefully into the custom floor tiles and concrete base to install track elements.

West Valley Shoji created a matching stain and finish to the designer's specifications. The client was thrilled with the results. In the photo,  the doors are still covered in their protective delivery wrap.

Further south in the city of Ventura, WVS recently created three, glossy black shoji doors which enclose a bar area with a built-in sink.

"Your Shoji Made Me Money!"

Noho apartment owner Sau-wan Leung needed to fix a trashed unit recently vacated by a rock band. Tired of bad renters she had encountered, Ms. Leung thought she might change the "feel" of kitchenthe apartment. Recommended by a satisfied client, Leung contacted West Valley Shoji to create unique, trend-setting kitchen and closet doors for her units. Thus she found that older rental units can be made more desirable than the new ones down the street -- with a little help.

"Shoji help me to stand out from other rentals in the area." remarked Ms. Leung. "The market has been slow, but once I put photos online, things start to happen very fast.".

The closet doors, executed in the linear grain of clear Douglas fir, incorporate a custom random "tetris" design, solid Douglas fir hipboards, beveled frames, and blue accents.

The kitchen panels use the rich texture of grasscloth backing on melamine doors, with mounted red and green parallel kumikos that harmonize with the colors tetris comp already in the kitchen. These doors were mounted on the original 1953 cabinetry with new euro-style hinges andstainless steel handles.

According to Ms. Leung, her rental inquiries jumped significantly once photos of the new designs came to market, and the units rented quickly.
