APM Music Selects WVS for View Installation

West Valley Shoji recently installed shoji panels in the 8th floor office of Adam Taylor, President of Associated Production Music. Adam's corner office at Sunset and Vine has a good view both South and East, but sunlight coming in through the south facing windows created a heat problem. West Valley Shoji worked closely with coordinator Sue Brownlee and interior designer Renee Brown to complete this three panel installation, which matched Adam's Japanese motif and inhibited heat buildup.

In addition to wood tracks (no metal hardware was used at the client's request), WVS also handled all the trim and molding work for the office remodel. The frames, molding, and track were milled from clear maple.

"It was tricky working in the confined office space, and the freight elevator was our lifeline for supplies," commented John. "Most of our team's work was done after hours."

"Everything looks great. The shoji screens are beautiful and the room looks completely different," remarked Brownlee.

Sherman Oaks Residence Gets New Shoji Look

A Sherman Oaks resident chose West Valley Shoji to create new closet doors, and pocket doors to the master bath and master closet. The client ordered "waterfall" kozo paper to give his doors a unique, textured look, and a dark mahogany, semi-gloss finish. He was very pleased with the results.

Since both the bathroom and closet have windows, the shoji paper transmits light through the rooms, especially in the morning hours.

West Valley Shoji coordinated the installation with contractor Bob Coyle and Scott Schneider's Old Time Flooring Company.

New Ocean View Locations Go with Japanese-Inspired Design

Irvine contractor Donn Bergeman Construction selected West Valley Shoji to create designs for a remodeled ocean view home in Laguna Beach. Using waterfall kozo paper and solid oak frames, WVS milled a non standard design into the kumiko grids. Bergeman chose MWE sliding door hardware from Germany, which has an extruded, stainless steel look.

Further north, WVS is installing full-wall sliding panels for an ocean view condo just south of Santa Barbara, in association with interior firm Kathryne Designs of Studio City.

Customers Try Exciting New Kumiko Designs

West Valley Shoji always encourages clients to try new grid and paper designs in their shoji. While rectangles or squares are often the traditional choice, there are many other designs available which not only increase the novelty, but long term value of the doors.

There also are a wide variety of paper choices that will enhance the look of your shoji. Kozo paper from Japan offers various watermark patterns such as pine, bamboo, and the increasingly popular waterfall paper, with it's vertical striations.

"Our standard paper is synskin, which is a highly durable, fiberglass imbedded material that looks a lot like rice paper, but lasts years longer," says installer David Koenigsberg. "You can take a heat gun to it, and it doesn't even phase it!"

Westwood Residents Install Panels and Bamboo Doors

In the sometimes dense residential areas of the Westside, window treatments can be essential to maintain privacy. Westwood attorney David Marroso asked West Valley Shoji to install shoji panels throughout two floors of his residence, providing seclusion from closely situated neighbors. Installation was completed in February '09.

As a collector of fine Japanese Art,  Jon Brod wanted a special look for his Westwood condo. Jon selected West Valley Shoji to design and install 5 custom made panels in his home.

The closet doors are two-toned, with stained bamboo vertical members. For his upstairs breezeway, Jon chose solid maple panels and bamboo pattern kozo paper. Johnson Hardware provides effortless sliding performance.
